Portuguese Film Competes at Marseille Film Festival
The film “The Gold and the World”, by Portuguese director Ico Costa, is part of the official competition at the Marseille Film Festival, which starts on the 25th in France, revealed the organization. Selected for the international competition, “The Gold and the World” is Ico Costa’s second feature film and was shot entirely in Mozambique, where the director has been working in recent years.
About the Film
“The film follows a young couple and tells a story like so many others in Mozambique, where, due to the lack of opportunities in many areas of the country, men in their early 20s leave home for a few months or several years to work”, says the producer in a press release. “O Ouro e o Mundo” will make its international debut in the context of a festival in Marseille, weeks after being awarded Best Portuguese Feature Film at the IndieLisboa festival.
Production Challenges
Regarding the production of “O Ouro e o Mundo”, with French co-production, Ico Costa explains that the film was postponed several times due to the covid pandemic -19 and circumstances on the ground ultimately dictated that it be done with “a small team and minimal equipment”.
Other Films in Competition
In the international competition there is also the Austrian film “It is at this point that the need to write history arises”, by Constanze Ruhm, with Portuguese minority co-production, and the Brazilian production “Parque de diversões”, by Ricardo Alves Jr. In the remaining competitive sections, there are also two national minority co-productions: “Habits d’Automne”, a French short film by Yohei Yamakado, and “Bienvenidos interplanetary conquerors and outer space”, a Colombian feature film by Andrés Jurado.
